My love and respect for dogs started very young, my parents have bred Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers since 1979 (I was a year old). I had the pleasure of being raised around dogs in a professional setting from breeding, to training, to showing. Growing up working for professional handlers I learned a lot about the personalities of dogs and how varied they were. I found it fascinating, and it became a focus for me. I observed as much as I could, I studied them while showing, and caring for them on the road. Jane Goodall was my idol during my young career, and continues to be to this day. Her level of patience and observation was key to understanding behavior.
The importance of taking the time to observe behavior as your foundation has become lost in many trainers today. Many are in a hurry and call them self dog trainers with very minimal experience. I find they get stuck when it comes to advanced behavioral issues, and many dogs do not get the training they need, or they simply decline.
I started Coach Karli Dog training in 1999 while living in Arizona. I partnered with many rescues while I lived there, observing and training for years with specific dogs that were extremely neglected, and mistreated created several new levels to my training program. I found myself completely immersed in creating rehab programs. That became my focus when I moved back to Michigan in 2008.
I have continued breeding, showing, and training our Soft Coated Wheaten terriers focusing on our import working lines, along with my very talented mother, Karen Mueller who breeds our heavy coat lines. Being breeders gave me the opportunity in 2012 to create a raising program for our specific breed, and lines, called Developing Dogs With A Purpose. Creating structure and desensitizing in the whelping box has elevated our breeding program over the past 10 years. I am honored to have created raising programs for other breeders across the country with wonderful results.
Currently I am partnered with several Veterinary clinics, breeders, and rescues across the country to offer Behavioral Rehab to dogs in need.
I co-chair the National Wheaten Rescue and have developed several protocols for our intakes as well as detailed training structures for dogs in their new homes.
I offer in person, and online sessions depending on your need. Balance is key for all dogs. I will create a custom behavioral program that suits your dog and family. To get more information feel free to give me a call and we can talk over your options.
